Asset Community is pleased to announce the launch of rpl.org.au — a free, independent community education resource dedicated to helping Australians understand Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The site is live now and available to anyone considering RPL as a pathway to a nationally recognised qualification.

RPL is one of the most underutilised pathways in the Australian vocational education and training system. Thousands of Australians carry skills and knowledge gained through years of work experience, life experience, and informal learning that could qualify them for a recognised credential — yet many don't know RPL exists, don't understand how it works, or don't know how to navigate the process effectively.

rpl.org.au was built to change that.

What is rpl.org.au?

rpl.org.au is a community education initiative of Asset Community Limited — a not-for-profit organisation focused on education, employment, and community development. The site is funded by Asset College (RTO 31718), whose support has made this free resource possible.

Importantly, rpl.org.au is not a training provider and does not offer RPL services directly. It is an independent information resource designed to help Australians make informed decisions about their vocational learning pathways — regardless of which RTO they ultimately choose to work with.

What the site covers

The resource covers the full RPL journey, from initial consideration through to receiving a qualification. Key topics include:

  • What RPL is — and how it differs from formal study and credit transfer
  • Who RPL suits — and who it may not be right for
  • Evidence requirements — what assessors look for and how to gather strong evidence
  • The principles of assessment and rules of evidence — what RTOs are required to apply
  • RTO Standards 2025 — what the standards say about RPL and what to expect from a quality provider
  • How to find a quality RTO — including how to use training.gov.au to identify qualifications and registered providers
  • RPL brokers and third-party providers — understanding the risks and how to protect yourself
  • Gap training and assessment — what happens when RPL reveals skill gaps
  • Tips for successful RPL — practical strategies for building a strong application
  • Managing sensitive or confidential evidence — guidance for those working in sensitive sectors
  • Misconceptions about RPL — addressing common misunderstandings that discourage eligible candidates

Why this matters

Recognition of Prior Learning has existed in the Australian VET system for decades, yet its uptake remains far below what the evidence of eligible candidates would suggest it should be. The reasons are well documented: lack of awareness, lack of accessible information, and in some cases, poor experiences with providers who have not applied RPL processes with the rigour the standards require.

Every year, Australians who have spent a decade or more developing genuine skills through work are told they need to start from scratch. In many cases, that's simply not true. RPL exists precisely for those people — and they deserve access to clear, independent information about how to use it.

By providing a free, independent, publicly available resource, Asset Community aims to close the information gap that prevents many eligible Australians from pursuing RPL — and to raise the standard of RPL practice across the sector by helping candidates understand what a quality RPL process should look like.

Part of a growing network

rpl.org.au is the second microsite in Asset Community's growing network of community education resources. The network is designed to publish original, in-depth educational content on topics where quality independent information is limited — creating genuine public value while supporting Asset Community's broader mission of building stronger communities through education and opportunity.

Further microsites are in development. If you are interested in supporting the network through sponsorship or partnership, please get in touch.

A note on funding and independence

rpl.org.au is funded by Asset College (RTO 31718). Asset College's support is acknowledged on the site and its services are listed as one option for Australians seeking RPL. The content of rpl.org.au is developed independently by Asset Community and is not written to promote any specific provider. All RTOs are subject to the same standards, and the site's guidance applies equally regardless of which provider a reader chooses.

Asset Community is not an RTO and does not deliver training or assessment services. All income is applied exclusively to charitable purposes in accordance with our constitution.
